PHNOM PENH, May 21, 2024 — Cambodia and Malaysia have engaged in comprehensive discussions aimed at enhancing cooperation in transport infrastructure and connectivity. Key areas of focus included the improvement of existing railways, the development of waterway transport, and the enhancement of human resource training within the transport sector.
Key Meeting Highlights:
The discussions were led by Peng Ponea, Cambodia's Minister of Public Works and Transport, and Shaharuddin Onn, the Ambassador of Malaysia to Cambodia. The meeting took place on May 20 at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport in Phnom Penh. The dialogue underscored the longstanding diplomatic relations between Cambodia and Malaysia, emphasizing the mutual benefits of enhanced cooperation in the transport sector.
Railway Improvements:
One of the primary topics of discussion was the improvement of Cambodia's existing railway infrastructure. Both parties recognized the vital role that a robust railway system plays in facilitating trade, enhancing economic growth, and improving connectivity within the region. Malaysia, with its advanced railway technologies and experience, offered insights and support to help Cambodia modernize its railway network. This includes potential collaborations on upgrading tracks, enhancing safety measures, and introducing more efficient rail services.
Waterway Transport Development:
In addition to railway improvements, the development of waterway transport was another significant area of focus. Given Cambodia's extensive network of rivers, enhancing waterway transport can provide a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to road transport. The discussions explored opportunities for developing port facilities, improving navigation systems, and establishing better regulations for waterway transport. Malaysia's experience in managing extensive waterway networks was highlighted as a valuable resource for Cambodia in this endeavor.
Human Resource Training:
Human resource training in the transport sector was also a critical component of the discussions. Recognizing the need for skilled professionals to manage and operate advanced transport systems, both countries emphasized the importance of training programs. Malaysia has committed to providing training opportunities for Cambodian professionals in various aspects of transport infrastructure, including railway construction, maintenance, and operations. These training programs are expected to enhance the capabilities of Cambodian transport professionals and ensure the sustainable development of the country's transport infrastructure.
Ceremony and Future Plans:
Following the discussions, a ceremony was held to mark the handover of certificates of completion to participants of a training program on railway construction in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This program is part of the broader initiative to enhance the skills and knowledge of Cambodian professionals in the transport sector.
Both Cambodia and Malaysia expressed their commitment to continuing these collaborative efforts. Future plans include joint research projects, technical exchanges, and the development of comprehensive transport strategies that align with regional development goals. These initiatives aim to create a more integrated and efficient transport network that will benefit both countries and the broader ASEAN region.
This cooperation not only enhances bilateral relations but also contributes to the broader goal of regional connectivity and economic growth.
